The Canadian Shared Security Operations Centre’s (CanSSOC) Threat Feed is among three initiatives prioritized for funding through CANARIE’s Cybersecurity Initiatives Program (CIP), a new national program to align the community to a common approach, coordinate and fund cyber security initiatives for Canada’s research and education sector.
Announced on Nov. 30, the CIP is funding initiatives that will strengthen the sector with advanced technologies, improved processes and broadened expertise. The first three initiatives are:
- CanSSOC Threat Feed
- Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) DNS Firewall
- Intrusion Detection System (Join the JSP)
“Participating in the CIP aligns with CanSSOC’s mandate to bring together a wide range of needs, partners, technology and data to strengthen the cyber security of Canada’s higher education sector,” says Jill Kowalchuk, CanSSOC Director. “This is an opportunity to accelerate CanSSOC’s pilot initiatives to support the development of detection and response capabilities across the higher education sector.”
CIP-funded initiatives will be delivered to eligible organizations through the provincial and territorial partners in Canada’s National Research and Education Network (NREN), in which CANARIE is the federal partner.
“NREN partners are an essential component of Canada’s higher education sector, delivering critical infrastructure, services and leadership that is driving Canadian research, education and innovation. NREN partners’ support of this coordinated and collaborative national approach to higher education cyber security builds on that legacy and community strength and CanSSOC is eager to work with the NREN to most effectively support the needs of the community,” says Kowalchuk.
How to participate in the CIP
Institutions that are currently being onboarded to the CanSSOC Threat Feed pilot will be transitioned to the CIP Threat Feed program.
To be eligible, an organization must be:
- Connected to Canada’s NREN; and
- A member of an NREN partner and connected to that NREN partner through an autonomous network; and
- A post secondary institution, a non-federal research facility or a Centre of Excellence.
Contact your local NREN partner for a link to the CIP participation form or to ask questions about your organization’s eligibility.
